Don Aguirre leads a group of Spanish conquistadors to South America in 1556 in quest of the Lágrimas de Cristal Tree, whose blossoms are said to cure disease, heal injuries, and lift curses. The Puka Michuna tribe uses the Tree's blooms to treat the survivors after the majority of the conquistadors had died. Aguirre stabs the tribal leader and destroys the hamlet when he refuses to give the location of the Tree. The dying chief throws a curse on them, rendering them eternal and unable to leave the Amazon River's vicinity; anyone attempting to flee is recaptured by the forest.
