Why is it called a Baltimore Oriole?
The Baltimore Oriole gets its name from its striking resemblance to a heraldic crest. Here’s the breakdown: The male Baltimore Oriole boasts a vibrant plumage of black and orange. These colors are identical to those found on the coat of arms of the Calvert family, specifically Lord Baltimore, a 17th-century English nobleman. Lord Baltimore played a significant role in founding the colony of Maryland. The city of Baltimore, named after him, became home to this brightly colored bird.
Early colonists likely noticed the resemblance between the bird and the Calvert family colors, and the name “Baltimore Oriole” stuck. It’s interesting to note that while the “Baltimore” part of the name stuck, there was a brief taxonomic shift. Scientists once classified the Baltimore Oriole along with another similar-looking bird, the Bullock’s Oriole, under the name “northern oriole.” However, due to minimal interbreeding, they were reclassified as separate species with the “Baltimore Oriole” moniker returning.
